Adding ADAS Calibrations to your business

Adding ADAS Calibrations to your business

ADAS, or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, are quickly becoming a daily part of life in the automotive repair industry. Today's cars can be equipped with multiple ADAS systems, like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blindspot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning, and others. These systems require calibration, or recalibration, when working on or around them. That's right, if you work on a component on a vehicle that the manufacturer determines affects the accuracy of an ADAS component, you must recalibrate. I talk with technicians and shops regularly that think they only need to calibrate if the are replacing a specific component, like a camera. That's simply not true, tasks that were common place prior to the introduction of ADAS have changed. What you did one way has now changed. When you encounter a vehicle equipped with ADAS you should review the service information. If you don't have access to service information, you should make it a priority and get access today. "Not knowing" that a system requires a calibration, is not an excuse and will not stand up in court if you find yourself there. Some examples of services you might perform that require a calibration on ADAS equipped vehicles are: windshield replacement, bumper removal and installation, radiator replacement, body work of any kind, repainting components, more.
